Confucian Temple Travel Guide

travel tips

There are commentators in the Tourist Service Hall and Confucius Temple Square. It is recommended to ask a tour guide to explain, so that you can understand the allusions of the historic sites here more clearly. If you come in the morning, you can enjoy the city opening ceremony outside the south gate of the Confucian Temple at 8 o’clock. There will be actors in ancient costumes performing, and at 5 o’clock in the afternoon (5:30 in peak season), there will be a city gate closing ceremony. However, performances will generally be suspended during the Spring Festival (for details, please refer to the announcement on the official website of the scenic spot).

In addition, it should be noted that local slaughtering scenes are very common. Many tourists have been deceived by taxi drivers, tricycle masters, or tour guides to those man-made scenic spots or restaurants that charge high fees and are unpopular. Don’t be fooled by their sales pitches. At the same time, try not to eat around the scenic area. There are many restaurants near the Confucius Temple that are very aggressive.

There are nine courtyards in the Confucius Temple, and more than a hundred buildings are symmetrically arranged on the left and right sides of the central axis road. After entering the first gate “Lingxing Gate” and looking in, you can see that the gates are so deep that you can’t see the bottom.

Then you will pass through the Shengshi Gate, Hongdao Gate, Dazhong Gate, and Tongwen Gate in turn. There are lush courtyards between each gate. Among them, there is a turret on the left and right sides of the Dazhong Gate, and there are two large stone steles on the left and right sides of Tongwen Gate. These are the four famous imperial steles of the Ming Dynasty.

The tall building behind Tongwen Gate is the library building “Kuiwen Pavilion” built in the Song Dynasty. After passing the Kuiwen Pavilion, you can see thirteen stele pavilions. There are more than 50 stele inscriptions from past dynasties, most of which are temples built by emperors Temple records. Going forward is Dachengmen. The word “Dachengmen” is the imperial pen of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty. The highlight here is the architectural design of the staggered eaves between Dachengmen and the adjacent stele pavilion.

After passing Dacheng Gate, there is a pavilion named “Xingtan”, which was built by the descendants of Confucius to commemorate Confucius’ lectures. Then came to the majestic and majestic Dacheng Hall. There are 28 stone pillars with cloud and dragon reliefs on the eaves of Dacheng Hall. In the hall, there are plaques such as “Teacher of All Ages” in Kangxi’s handwriting and “Swen is here” in Guangxu’s handwriting.

Dacheng Hall is the main hall and landmark building of the Confucian Temple. It is also known as the “Three Eastern Halls” together with the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Tiankuang Hall in Tai’an Dai Temple. The statue of Confucius is enshrined in the center of the hall, and the statues of the seventy-two disciples and Confucian sages of the past dynasties are on the left and right sides. The important activities of worshiping Confucius by the emperors of the past dynasties are held in the main hall. Nowadays, many tourists come to the Confucian Temple to burn incense and pray for blessings every day, among which the incense in front of the Dacheng Hall is quite prosperous.

The sleeping hall in the backyard of Dacheng Hall is dedicated to Qi Guan, the wife of Confucius, and there are stone comic strips recording Confucius’ deeds in the hall of holy traces. In addition, the west road of Dacheng Hall is a building dedicated to Confucius’ parents, and the east road is the former residence of Confucius, Lubi, etc. Among them, “Lubi” is a small section of low wall. It is said that during the period of Qin Shihuang’s “burning books and burying Confucianism”, the descendants of Confucius hid Confucius’ slips in the wall.

Scenic activities

Throughout the dynasties, the Confucian temple has been a place to worship Confucius, and the activities of offering sacrifices to Confucius are still going on. In recent years, usually from September 26th to October 10th every year, the Confucian Temple in Qufu will hold a ceremony to worship Confucius. At that time, there will be large-scale temple music and dance activities, and many people wearing Hanfu and e-crowns can be seen participating. During the grand ceremony, people from all walks of life will come to worship Confucius.
