Huizhou Ancient City

The ancient city of Huizhou is located on the north bank of the Lianjiang River in Shexian County. It was first built in the Qin Dynasty. After the Tang Dynasty, it became the seat of the ancient Huizhou government. Tang Xianzu’s sentence “I have never dreamed of going to Huizhou all my life” made many people dream about it. The city gates, archways, and government offices unique to Fuzhi allow tourists to still appreciate the legacy of the ancient Huizhou government.

There are many roads to enter the ancient city. It is not very particular about which road to enter. The ancient city is not big, and the main attractions can be visited after a circle. There are ticket offices in Huiyuan Garden near Renhe Building in the north and Duojingyuan Tourist Service Center outside Wengcheng in the south. Among the several city gates in the ancient city of Huizhou, Nanqiao Tower is the most distinctive. 13 pairs of pillars form the door frame, lined up one by one in the door opening, and prop up the tower.

The Xuguo Stone Square that you can see after entering the Dongqiao Building (Yanghe Gate) is the most essential part of the entire ancient city. It was built in the 12th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1584). There are eight pillars in the archway, the cross section of which is in the shape of a “mouth”. It is a three-dimensional structure. The four outer sides and the inner four sides can be observed. There are twelve stone lions sitting at the foot of the columns, and the stone carvings on the upper part are exquisite. At present, there is only one ancient archway in this shape, and the owner of the archway, Xu Guo, was a nobleman of the three dynasties.

Many scenic spots in the ancient city spread out from Xuguo Shifang. To the west, you can go to the Huizhou government office, which was rebuilt in modern times, imitating the appearance of the Ming Dynasty government office; to the east, you can visit the memorial hall of Tao Xingzhi, a native of Shexian County; Garden, but Huiyuan is full of antique buildings. Doosan Street, located in the northeast of the ancient city, gathers ancient Huizhou dwellings, archways and ancient wells. It is very interesting to walk on the ancient streets paved with bluestone slabs and cobblestones.

From the ancient city of Wengcheng, cross the stone bridge “Taiping Bridge” built in the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty, and arrive at the south bank of the Lianjiang River, where there are Taibai Tower and Xin’an Stele Garden. Taibai Building was built to commemorate Li Bai. The most famous works in Xin’an Stele Garden are “Yu Qing Zhai Tie” and “Qing Jian Tang Tie” from the Ming Dynasty. Visitors who like calligraphy can take a look. Traveling east along the Lianjiang River, the Changqing Temple Pagoda built in the second year of Xuanhe in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1119) is inaccessible, but it has prepared a real surprise for tourists who approach it. There are colorful murals on each floor of the external tower. It has become blurred with age, and the murals cannot be found from a distance.

The last scenic spot, Yuliang, is 2 kilometers east of the ancient city. The entrance is on the north bank of the Lianjiang River. Therefore, after seeing the Changqing Temple Pagoda, you have to cross the Taiping Bridge and return to the north bank. Only the bridge can cross the river.

The main attraction of Yuliang is the Ming Dynasty Yuliang Dam on the Lianjiang River. Whether you can walk up to the dam depends on the amount of water in the Lianjiang River. When you walk to the dam, remember to pay attention to the small stone “Yuanbao lock” embedded horizontally between the long stones and the long stones, which plays the role of stabilizing the dam; there is also a water gate in the center of the dam for drainage. If you want to take a local boat tour on the Lianjiang River, the price can be negotiated. There are still residents living in Yuliang Old Street on the north shore, and they dry their sheets in front of the ancient buildings as always, and time seems to stand still here.

At night, the ancient city is lit up, and you can see the night view. You can stay at Huangshan Shexian Jiuyue Huizhou Inn next to Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hall in the ancient city, and there are more accommodations outside the ancient city. The restaurants are concentrated outside the Huiyuan Garden. The local specialty Huizhou Yipin Guo is a big pot with a layer of chicken, a layer of duck, a layer of meat, and a layer of oily tofu, dotted with egg dumplings. Tofu, stinky mandarin fish, etc. are also worth tasting. If you come across a hawker who sells sesame seed cakes, you can buy them and eat them while shopping. The taste is very fragrant.

Huizhou Ancient City Travel Guide

ticket policy

Huangshan Huizhou Ancient City

Let’s first understand the ticket policy of the ancient city. It turns out that the ticket for the ancient city of Huizhou is 100 yuan, including visiting the ancient city of Huizhou and Huizhou government office. But this ticket is only for out-of-town tourists, the open door, such as the tide of people, how to identify out-of-town tourists? This operation can only rely on the intuition of the staff, to see who is “disliked”, just go forward and check it out. Is this operation unreliable?

During the long holidays during the peak tourist season, there will be staff on duty to check the tickets at all the small alleys and entrances that can enter the ancient city, which is very strict. Now is the off-season, the ticket inspection system is not so strict. This picture shows one of the many ticket gates in the ancient city, just at the entrance of the alley.
